applying for a new Emirates ID card

The Emirates ID is an identity card provided by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA) to all UAE citizens and residents. If you’re wondering how to apply for, renew, or replace your Emirates ID, this blog will walk you through the steps. In this comprehensive introduction to the Emirates ID, we have also mentioned the papers necessary for application, the issuance costs, and the processing periods.

WHAT IS THE EMIRATES’ IDENTIFICATION?

The Emirates ID, often known as the UAE ID Card, is an identity card issued by the Federal Authority of Identity and Citizenship. It serves as a portable personal database for all UAE citizens and residents. Everyone who lives in the UAE must apply for and carry the card at all times.

Each Emirates ID card is issued a unique 15-digit identity number to the cardholder. Aside from the holder’s portrait, the card has an electronic chip with the holder’s personal data (including finger biometrics).

WHY IS AN EMIRATES ID REQUIRED?

The Emirates ID issued by ICA is more than just a legal identity card for citizens and residents. You must provide your card information when applying for a new phone and internet connection, establishing a bank account, paying your DEWA bills, registering your vehicle, paying traffic fines, and other services.

In addition, all cardholders can take use of Emirates ID perks. Cardholders, for example, can utilize the Smart Gates established across the Dubai International Airport terminals to complete passport screening processes in seconds rather than standing in a large line. Similarly, Emirates ID users may use their cards to obtain a credit report at Al Etihad Credit Bureau customer care centers. As a result, the Emirates ID has various applications for anybody residing in the UAE.

WHAT ARE THE NEW EMIRATES ID'S SPECIAL FEATURES?

Emirati passports and identification cards are being redesigned by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA). A new and better Emirates ID is being launched as part of this initiative.

Non-visible data will be better protected on the new card. This means that the ICA’s E-link system can read sensitive data. This new card is made of polycarbonate, which means it will have a service life of more than a decade. Furthermore, the card holder’s date of birth will now be used to validate the laser printing feature.

The card’s chip also has a larger capacity and non-touch data reading capabilities. Finally, the new card will have extra data such as demographic group, issuing authority, and professional data.

Old Emirates ID cards can be used until they expire. Those who have previously applied for renewal can use the digital version until their real card arrives. The ICA UAE Smart app now includes a digital Emirates ID card. You may get it through the App Store and Google Play.

Another piece of good news is that, even with the upgrades, there will be no additional price when you update your Emirates ID the next time. The adoption of high-tech security is another step toward flawless identity theft prevention.

WHAT IS THE VALIDITY OF THE EMIRATES ID?

The validity of Emirates ID varies depending on whether you are an expat, a UAE citizen, or a GCC country.

  • Expat Residents: The validity of the UAE resident visa is determined.
  • Citizens of the UAE: 5 or 10 years
